Spring is sung at Phipps Conservatory's spring flower show
Saturday, March 13, 2010

After such a rough winter, Phipps Conservatory's spring flower show is like, well, a breath of spring. The show opened Thursday in Oakland and continues through April 11. In tune with this year's theme, "Arias in Bloom," each room has been designed as a floral interpretation of the one of the world's famous operas. Visitors will see thousands of brightly colored daffodils, lilies, tulips, hyacinths and other blooming plants.

"Spring has definitely arrived at Phipps," says Margie Radebaugh, Phipps' director of horticulture and education. "In addition to the masses of spring bulbs, we've forced rhododendrons and azaleas into early bloom for the show."

The show is dedicated to the memory of the late Frank Sarris, a trustee, benefactor and friend of Phipps. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and until 10 p.m. Fridays. Admission is free for members; $12 for adults; $11 for seniors (62 and older) and students with ID; $9 for children ages 2 to 18; free for children under 2.
