2 from New Castle charged with threats against teen witness in sex assault case
Saturday, March 13, 2010

The state attorney general's office charged two New Castle residents Thursday with intimidating a teenage girl who was due to testify in a sexual assault case against a New Castle police officer.

Police arrested 20-year-old Robert Alex Bogdan, along with his live-in girlfriend Billie D. Esposito, 35, for intimidation of witnesses, obstruction of the administration of law, criminal conspiracy and hindering apprehension or prosecution.

Mr. Bogdan is the nephew of police Officer Richard Corbin, who was charged with sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault in 2008. His trial is set to begin Monday in Lawrence County.

In a criminal complaint, police said the two drove Officer Corbin's green Jeep Cherokee to the Hermitage residence of one of the two teenage accusers. There, they tried to pressure her into writing a statement that said that the sexual assault never took place in exchange for $4,000.

Mr. Bogdan also offered the victim the opportunity to get into drug sales with him, but the victim viewed the offer as an attempt to bribe her "to not testify against Corbin," the complaint said.

When the victim declined the money, Ms. Esposito and Mr. Bogdan urged her to get in touch with an attorney and tell the attorney that the assault never happened. The two also told the victim they wanted her to beat up Officer Corbin's other teen-aged accuser because they said she was lying about the incident of sexual assault.

The victim told police that Mr. Bogdan has "a propensity for violence," the complaint said.

Another witness told police he observed Mr. Bogdan carrying a handgun in his waistband on Wednesday, though Mr. Bogdan does not have a license.

Police also said that when investigators from the attorney general's office went to the New Castle residence of the two to speak to Ms. Esposito about Officer Corbin, Mr. Bogdan told them Ms. Esposito wanted them to leave.

In a release from the attorney's general office, Attorney General Tom Corbett said that the two have been charged by New Castle police "with similar offenses involving another individual in this case."

On Friday, Mr. Bogdan was being lodged in the Lawrence County Jail on $50,000 bail, and Ms. Esposito was being held in the Mercy County Jail on $75,000 straight bond.
