Production has begun on a movie version of "One Day," the best-selling David Nicholls novel tucked into lots of beach bags this summer.
Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess will star in the story of a principled, ambitious working-class young woman and a wealthy charmer who meet on July 15, 1988, the night of their college graduation. For the next two decades, every July 15 reveals how the pair are faring as their friendship ebbs and flows.
Mr. Nicholls is adapting his own book with Lone Scherfig ("An Education") directing. Focus Features is making the movie in England, Scotland and France, with a release tentatively set for the third quarter of 2011.
Ms. Hathaway is known for a variety of roles, including her Oscar-nominated turn in "Rachel Getting Married," while Mr. Sturgess was a working-class boy from Liverpool in "Across the Universe" and a quiet MIT math whiz recruited for a Vegas card-counting scheme in "21."
Magnolia Pictures will release "I'm Still Here," a movie portraying a tumultuous year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix (including, perhaps, his befuddling appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman").
Casey Affleck directs the movie following the Oscar nominee as he announces he's retiring from films and reinventing himself as a hip-hop musician.
"I'm Still Here" is scheduled for a Sept. 10 release, although that date could be slightly later in Pittsburgh.
