Sunday, July 18, 2010

The 35th Toronto International Film Festival will open Sept. 9 with the world premiere of "Score: A Hockey Musical." The film tells the story of a 17-year-old hockey phenom who goes from obscurity to fame overnight.

It stars Olivia Newton-John, singer/songwriter Marc Jordan, newcomers Noah Reid and Allie MacDonald, and features cameos from the Canadian music, broadcast and hockey worlds.

The cast also includes Stephen McHattie, John Pyper-Ferguson, and Brandon Firla and features cameos by music artists Nelly Furtado, Hawksley Workman and John McDermott, journalists George Stroumboulopoulos and Evan Solomon, sports anchor Steve Kouleas, hockey dad Walter Gretzky and hockey star Theo Fleury.

Ticket packages for the Sept. 9-19 festival are available at tiff.net/thefestival or by phone at 1-416-968-FILM or 1-877-968-FILM weekdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In brief

• The Carnegie Screenwriters will present a seated reading of "Mary, Mary," a romantic comedy by Wendy Grube, at 7 p.m. Monday at Pittsburgh Filmmakers' Melwood Screening Room, 477 Melwood Ave., Oakland.

• "Winter's Bone," one of the year's best reviewed movies and a Sundance Film Festival winner, is scheduled to open in Pittsburgh July 30.

• TheWrap.com has discovered a newsy nugget that could mean a fourth "Toy Story" movie will come our way. The door certainly was left open and, with 3-D and moviegoer loyalty and love, the franchise is healthier than ever.

The website reports Tim Allen, the voice of Buzz Lightyear, is under contract to speak for the character for a fourth installment, if there is one. In the meantime, the "Toy Story" characters will appear in a short film attached to "Cars 2," opening in June 2011.
