India arrests son in Cecil mom's death
Saturday, August 14, 2010

Joncarlo Patton has been arrested in India in the murder of his mother, Cindy Iannarelli of Cecil, according to an Indian newspaper, the Deccan Herald.

The 15-year-old boy today appeared before the chief judicial magistrate in an Indian courtroom and was sent to a juvenile home, the paper reported. The magistrate ordered him to appear for a hearing Monday.

Dr. Iannarelli was found dead this week at a resort in the historic town of Osian in India. Her throat had been slit. Her son, who accompanied her on the trip, was detained at an airport in Jodhpur, 60 miles from the crime scene.

According to the Deccan Herald, the judge ordered Joncarlo to return to court on Monday.

The paper quoted police as saying that the teen wanted his divorced parents to get back together again. "'They had a heated argument on the issue on Thursday and in the night this incident occurred,'" the paper quoted the police as saying.

The Indian paper gave this account of the incident: The teen slit his mother's throat while she was sleeping, using a knife he bought at the resort for opening packing material. He allegedly dumped his and her blood-stained clothes in the bathroom, wrapped her body in a sheet and threw it below onto a sand dune. On Friday morning, he went to Jodhpur with his mother's belongings and dumped them in a bin.

An examination of the body took place with a four-member team from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, the paper said.
